This is a satchel-style bag, roughly eleven inches in width and height, made of fulled wool and embroidered with perl cotton. An edging of warp-faced narrow weaving has been applied round the interior edge of the red linen binding. The strap (not pictured) is also fulled wool with a matching warp-faced band attached.
The lion face design is taken from a 12th century tile from England. I also added pearls at each square intersection as well as metal findings and garnets for the eyes.
I've been interested in intarsia in wool since this project and this preliminary project. This is a much larger project than either one of those and I learned a great deal about the limits of intarsia in wool. I probably won't do chequed ground like this again because it's sheer size was a little difficult to manage. Intarsia seems to be better suited for smaller projects. But, overall, I'm happy with how this turned out.
