My husband asked for a favor from me and while I am all for favors and the idea behind them, I wanted to do something more than the usual tag favor or length of woven ribbon. So I used the opportunity to work on the raised embroidery technique.
The rose was embroidered separately by first building it up into a bass relief by layering fulled wool cut into various shapes. Then I glued that to a layer of thin cotton and embroidered the shape by laying threads down and couching them onto the shape. After which, I cut the piece from the cotton, glued the raw edges under and then sewed the rose to the to of my husband's new belt bag.
For this bag, I used fulled red wool as the ground and lined with with a heather gray fulled wool. I then bound the edges with black linen.
All the embroidery was done in laid stitch work with size 8 perl cotton.
