Moon Face Bag

Bone Moon Face Bag

The Moon Face Bag

This bag was created after the Uzbek bag and completely from my head using elements of Uzbek motifs. It also marks the start of my obsession with small bags and bag shapes and embellishing them.

This particular bag has been additionally embellished with metal beads and the center motive is not embroidered but a bone moon face set in sterling silver.

I obtained the moon face from a dealer on Ebay and then created the cabochon setting on my metalsmithing bench, using left-over sheet silver from another project. The points were then drilled with a tiny drill bit so that the setting could be attached to the face of the bag.

The rest of the bag echos the Uzbek bag in many ways. There is the central hooked sun disc theam, executed in chain and stem stitch. There is a single disc of white fulled wool appliqued to the center. The addition of the straight bars or 'rays' is mine as are the curls and the triangles of red glass beads.

Unlike the Uzbek bag, however, I did not surround the entire perimeter with embroidery, prefering instead to allow for some 'white' space to show off the design.

All embroidery was executed using DMC #5 perl cotton in chain and stem stiches. The fringe is hand made using the same perl cotton.
