Rabbit Bag

The Rabbit Bag - A Departure

This bag is a departure from my usual in a couple of ways. First, the shape is a simple rectangle (a little easier to get things out of). Second, the color of the fulled wool ground is white rather than black. Third, I did not use DMC perl cotton on this one; I used a wool/silk embroidery thread obtained from Thread Needle Street in Issaquah, WA.

The first visit I made there (I was living in Seattle at the time), I found this wonderful embroidery thread and in colors that I am really attracted to. So I purchased several skeins and brought them home.

They languished in my studio for a couple of months until I decided to use them from my 'car project'. While I was living in Seattle, I had an extensive commute which included waiting for several minutes with my son for the school bus and a number of badly timed traffic lights. So, while I was waiting for the bus or for the lights to change, I would pick this up and do several stitches.

Using this method, it took me the entire school year (nine months) to finish this. The central rabbit motif, workedin fulled white wool and appliqued on to the square of fulled black wool (appliqued on to the white ground) is a tribute to my son's class pet that died that school year. On the flap are three running rabbit beads.

While this bag is based on Central Asian shapes and themes, I went completely off on my own as far as the embroidery and cord attachments were concerned. Additionally, I did not like the wool/silk embroidery floss, when finished with this project. I am really attracted to the look of perl cotton after it has been ironed smooth and this ironed flat but with a matte finish.
