Estrella Largess Bag

A Largess Bag for Estrella

Based on a period image of a Norse lion that our Largess Bag coorinator, the ever awesome Dagmaer in Hvassa, found. There were four different permutations of the design that we cut out and put together in kits for people to take home and embroider. I got to take two bags home but decided to share my second bag with Gwen the Potter, who lives in Dragons Laire with me.

I chose to use all wool embroidery thread for this project, in colors that were more closely matched to what was possible from natural dyes in period. I also quilted the body of the lion as there were three layers there and I love the tactile effect. I think that I will be exploring the quilting/trapunto/stuffing technique a little further this year.

This is a much less 'blingy' bag than is my usual but I love it nonetheless as I think the subtle lines and choice of colors really works together.

The bag itself is lined with a linen and the edges bound with wool straps.

This bag and thirteen of its fellows will be winging their way to Estrella War this year as part of largess gifts that Their Majesties An Tir will be giving out.
